Reviews and Media

We'd like to share with you some recent comments about the Choir, from local Press, concert goers and new choristers finding out just what goes into creating the famous "Orpheus Sound".

WYCOMBE MUSEUM HOSTS ORPHEUS HISTORY DISPLAY (March 2010)

Orpheus Exhibition
(l to r: Ken Walls, Jim Cleary, Mel Jenkins, Alan Walsh)

An exhibition dedicated to 87 years of the Orpheus is now on display at Wycombe Museum.

The exhibition was arranged for the choir by Chairman Jim Cleary, 1st tenor Mel Jenkins and 2nd basses Ken Walls and Alan Walsh.

Compiled mainly by Mel Jenkins, it tells the story of the choir since its inception in 1923 with photos, programmes and memorabilia from across the decades.

Planned to run until May 22, choristers and choir supporters will be fascinated by the displays and illustrated fascia boards.

The museum is free to enter and is well worth a visit. As well as the Orpheus exhibition there is a host of other Wycombe-orientated material to see.

Wycombe Museum is in Priory Avenue, High Wycombe, (Tel 01494 421895) and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5pm (Sunday 2 pm to 5pm). There is pay parking in the roads adjacent. The Museum is two minutes walk from Wycombe Station.

ORPHEUS CHOIR CUTS LATEST CD (Feb 2010)

The Wycombe Orpheus Choir recently spent a busy day at Wycombe Abbey Arts Centre recording their latest CD collection. See Bucks Free Press report here.

GLORIA HUNNIFORD ‘JOINS MALE VOICE CHOIR’! (Feb 2010)

Gloria Hunniford

TV personality Gloria Hunniford has become a Patron of Wycombe Orpheus Male Voice Choir. See LocalLondon report here.

After first hearing the choir when they sang at the Variety International’s Awards Banquet at London’s Guildhall last year, she was delighted to accept the invitation from her friend and co-Patron, John Ratcliff, CBE.

“What a fantastic sound!” “What wonderful singing,” said Gloria as the choir came off the stage that evening.

She was hosting the Awards ceremony, stood in the wings for the performance, and led the 500 or so celebrity guests in the enthusiastic applause that followed, adding: “I would jump at the chance to sing with them”

She will attend as many events as her professional commitments allow and has already agreed to present the Young Musicians’ Awards at the Orpheus’s annual concert at the Wycombe Swan on May 8.

As one of Britain's best known TV and radio personalities, Gloria Hunniford requires little introduction. From chat show and current affairs host to presenter of religious and lifestyle programmes, Gloria is one of the few broadcasters who can genuinely claim to embrace the whole of popular culture. Her ability to communicate with people from all walks and backgrounds has earned her a rare iconic status in the hearts and minds of the British public.

Gloria started out as a singer in her native Northern Ireland, and made many records.  She currently presents Cash in the Attic for BBC1 and Cash in the Celebrity Attic for BBC2, as well as Rip-Off Britain for BBC1 and Angels for Sky Real Lives. Gloria has also co-hosted The One Show, is a regular on The Alan Titchmarsh Show for ITV1.  And, of course, her well-known TV ads aimed at lowering cholesterol levels.

Jim Cleary, newly-elected Chairman of the Choir said: “We are all delighted to have Gloria Hunniford as Patron of Wycombe Orpheus Male Voice Choir, alongside John Ratcliff.  Her sunny personality, enthusiasm for music and media fame will be of tremendous value in our exciting
future”

Orpheus at Miss World Charity Dinner, November 9th 2009 (report by our special correspondent, Alan Walsh)

Miss World 2009

"It was definitely a case of Strictly Come Cheering when the Orpheus received a standing ovation for their musical contribution to the Miss World Charity Dinner – the cheers were led by none other than Brucie, Bruce Forsyth, taking a night off from his duties at the BBC’s prime time dance competition."
